How to Choose the Right Cannabis Strains for Your Lifestyle

Oct 11, 2023

With seemingly countless cannabis strains on the market, it’s never been easier to find one that fits (and elevates) your lifestyle. Some people want a pick-me-up sativa strain that sparks their creativity, while others seek out an indica variety that takes them to the next level of relaxation. Pain relief qualities and aroma are also factors often taken into account when choosing strains of cannabis.

A quick clarifying note: sativa and indica are both
species of cannabis, while the different cannabis strains have been created by humans through selective breeding that increases certain desired characteristics, such as high THC concentration. Plants of the same cannabis species have things in common with each other, but they also have differences based on their strain.

Now, without further ado, we present a
cannabis strain guide to help you find your perfect weed match (or matches).

The basics: Choosing indica vs sativa

If you’re just starting to experiment with weed, you may not be familiar with the differences between these two main cannabis species. Indica plants can be identified by their shorter stature and broader leaves, compared to sativa plants.

When it comes to picking out a cannabis strain,
expect sativa strains to energize and uplift you. Sativa varieties are often used in the daytime, before going out at night, or any time you want to be active, creative and sociable. On the other hand, indica strains are known for deep relaxation and relief from pain and stress. They often stimulate a pleasant feeling in the muscles, known as a body high.

It’s important to note that the indica vs sativa comparison is a generalization, and your experience with any particular cannabis strain on a given day will depend on a range of factors, such as your mood and energy levels before taking that first puff.

Cannabis strains that let you function

There’s no doubt that consuming cannabis allows you to see the world in a different way. Mundane things that you normally don't ponder much may strike you as funny, fill you with awe, or just seem downright strange. This perspective shift is fodder for creative expression, which is why marijuana is associated with many artistic movements.

If you’re looking for strains of cannabis that spark creativity, you should probably start by trying sativa or hybrid varieties that are known for producing high-energy experiences. In order to properly evaluate whether the cannabis strain is a good fit for your purposes, we recommend also setting up your environment beforehand in a way that facilitates self-expression.

For example, if you’re a painter, get your canvas and brushes ready
before you consume cannabis; this way, you’re ready to turn your idea into reality the second that the weed-induced inspiration hits. Don’t smoke on an empty stomach in these cases, because cannabis may intensify your hunger, causing distraction. Last but not least, you can try a few minutes of meditating while high to induce creative insights.

Cannabis for creativity

Since this post is about finding the right cannabis strains for your particular lifestyle, one factor we can’t fail to mention is how “functional” the weed leaves you. Some busy people efficiently mix work and pleasure by consuming cannabis while marking off items on their to-do list. They find it enjoyable to smoke a joint, put on some tunes, and do some light house or yard work.

As you probably gathered from the previous section, sativa strains are generally the best bet if you’re looking for a cannabis variety that lets you still get things done. Sour Diesel, for example, is a pungent sativa strain that’s ideal for an energetic and focused experience. You may also be interested in a hybrid strain, like the delicious
Super Starfruit, which packs a euphoric yet functional high into a piney, citrusy package.

A word of caution: you may be functioning while consuming cannabis, but your dexterity and reflexes are still impaired, making it dangerous to drive high. We also recommend staying away from any other activity that’s likely to cause injury, such as chopping vegetables.

Strains of cannabis for insomnia and pain relief

Insomnia and chronic pain are problems that can transform your lifestyle and diminish your quality of life. Weed may not cure these afflictions, but certain cannabis strains can offer a great deal of much-needed relief.

In general, indica strains are best for catching a break from pain and summoning sleep. For example, for pain relief you might try the
Gelato Cake strain, which provides an intense body high and has a flavor profile featuring notes of vanilla and berries.

To sleep quickly and deeply, give the
Super Boof strain a go. It has an earthy aroma with cherry notes and provides an experience that could be described as both giggly and deeply relaxing, perfect to consume when you’re already in your pajamas.

Lawmakers say the products should be pulled until they are proven safe. By Mark Huffman 09/23/2019 | ConsumerAffairs | E-cigarette News The anti-vaping drumbeat is getting louder in Washington, as four members of the U.S. Senate have asked the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to immediately ban the most popular kind of e-cigarette products from the market. The senators -- Dick Durbin (D-IL), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) -- cite the mysterious lung ailments that have been linked to e-cigarette use. In a letter to Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Ned Sharpless, the lawmakers call for the immediate removal of all pod- and cartridge-based e-cigarettes from the market, unless or until they can prove that they benefit the public health. The proposal is a sharp escalation of the steps currently under consideration. The FDA last week launched a criminal investigation into the 530 cases of lung illnesses, including eight deaths. The Trump administration is also reportedly considering a ban on flavored e-cigarette products. Lawmakers fault the FDA In their letter, the senators denounce what they say has been a lack of action from the FDA when it comes to e-cigarette products. “The proliferation of cartridge-based e-cigarettes—and their ever-increasing popularity with children—is primarily due to the FDA’s years-long refusal to regulate any e-cigarette devices or impose common-sense design standards preventing against adulteration, despite having the authority to do so,” they said. “Make no mistake: none of the e-cigarettes, including cartridge-based e-cigarettes, currently on the market have gone through the FDA approval process. They have not demonstrated that they are safe and effective for helping adults quit smoking cigarettes.” The lawmakers point to reports of the increasing use of e-cigarettes by people under the age of 18. They contend that five million children are now vaping, including one in four high school students. In a recent one-year period, 2017 to 2018, the lawmakers say America saw a 78 percent increase in the number of high school students using e-cigarettes and a 48 percent increase in the number of middle school children using the products. The senators draw a distinction between cartridge-based systems and the open tank e-cigarettes that are typically sold in vape shops. They say cartridge-based products are often sold in convenience stores and other outlets where under-age consumers have freer access.
